Some of the Best Powerful Portable Generators on the Market Today

Overview

Manufacturers of portable generators say that their most powerful models are a match for a permanently installed backup/emergency standby generator, but offer the added convenience of relative transportability. On the one hand, they are a viable alternative to bigger, fixed, and more expensive units that aren't easy to take with you when moving house. But on the hand, no portable generator has the stamina of a big fixed installation, usually powered by diesel.

None of the generators here have been built with inverter technology. While they can pump out a lot of power, they aren't made for sensitive electronics which can be easily damaged by spikes in the current. At the very least, you should install a line conditioner to provide some protection before connecting such devices. But be aware, the output will never be as clean as that produced by an inverter

All the models here have either key or button electric start systems, and some include a remote electric start key fob too.

Powerful Model Types

Just under half the generators here are dual fuel models, which operate either with gasoline or propane (LPG). Many buyers say the dual fuel option gives them greater flexibility and versatility in where and how they use their generators. If you are interested in a dual fuel model here are a variety of models with a range of power outputs. A few of these incorporate inverter technology and are in general quieter and lighter, but offer much less power. The choice is yours.

Power Outputs

Here you will find generators ranging at the top end from a maximum starting output of 15000 watts and a maximum 12000 running watts, down to the bottom end with 7500 starting watts and 6000 running watts. The most powerful of these models are to a limited extent equal to some of the fixed backup/emergency standby generators. However, remember that no portable generator, however powerful, can run continuously like a fixed unit is designed to do.
