Portable Inverter Generators

The inverter technology used in the portable generators shown below is a more advanced and sophisticated power generation method compared to that employed in traditional portable generators. It is designd to help address some of the limitations and drawbacks found in "conventional" generators and offers a number of benefits, including in relation to how many devices we have nowadays that incorporate sensitive electronic components. These can be easily damaged by fluctutations in the current more associated with traditional technology.

Steady and Clean Power Output

While an engine in a traditional generator produces "raw" or "dirty" alternating current (AC) power directly, the irregular output can produce fluctuations in the voltage and frequency. This, as we have mentioned, can cause serious problems with sensitive electronics.

Inverter generators differ by creating AC power in a two-step process. First, their engines generate high-frequency AC power. This AC power is then converted into direct current (DC) power. Finally, the DC power is "inverted" back into clean, stable AC power with very low total harmonic distortion (THD).

Fuel Efficiency

Traditional generators usually run at a constant speed whatever the power demand of attached devices. This can be wasteful, especially when the required power is low, as the generator consumes fuel at an unnecessarily high rate.

Inverter generators are designed to adjust engine speed according to the load demand. In other words, when the load is low, the engine slows down, thereby reducing fuel consumption and allowing it run for longer periods. They also nomally have an Eco Mode. These features alone can extend engine life.

Noise Levels

As traditional generators run at a constant high speed they are much noiser and the muffling used is not very effective.

Although there are exceptions, the engines in inverter generators are housed within an enclosure which helps to reduce noise. In addition, variable engine speed allows them to throttle down when the power demand is low, further reducing noise levels. Because of this they are often a preferred choice for camping, outdoor events, or any other situation where noise pollution is a concern.


While both types of generators are classified as being portable, those built with traditional technology are much more bulky and heavier due to their design and the components needed for their operation.

Inverters are generally more compact and much more lightweight, making them easier to transport and store. These can be important features for those who may be physically unable to handle the bigger generators, as well as being so much more portable and useful for recreational purposes where portable power can make activities so much more fun.

There is a Downside

While all of the above features may for some people make a compelling case, inverters cannot compete with traditiional generators in terms of their power outputs. If you need sheer power, perhaps for connecting into your home supply for serious home backup, then a traditional generator will be your best option if a dedicated standby generator is out of the question.
